Psilos allotment birds

February 25th 2008 - "Robin roundup"

sparrowhawk

This last week I have been busy working on my allotment and trying not to get too much by the birds. The usual suspects are around as always though yesterday I could have sworn I saw a male Reed bunting. Was busy digging when I became aware of a call that is not usually heard here. Immediatly thought Reed bunting but as I listened and it didnt come again I decided I must have misheard. A few minutes later I walked to the top of my plot and saw a bird disappear through the fence. My brain immediatly thought male reed bunting but as I never saw it again I cannot confirm it. These birds do breed a mile up the road at Doffcocker lodge so I guess it wouldnt be beyond the realms of possiblity that they will turn up on my allotment. It would be a good tick if I did see it again though.

Have a pair of Long tailed tits coming to the feeders regularly now. Im sure they will be nesting somewhere very close by really soon.

Parked my car at a slightly different angle today so I could get a better view of the side trees. Was hoping to photograph the Nuthatch there but had no luck as they didnt come in until late but did get a Coal tit having a bit of a preen.

Alot of robins around today all displaying and fighting one another in a bid to stake out their territories and pair up. The bird above was half heartedly telling another robin to back off!
The Nuthatches didnt come in until late and then only came in a couple of times. I didnt linger either as I have too much other work to do and spring is right around the cornor...
