12th 2007 - "An allotment first" |
| |
Despite the fact that there is much work
to be done on the allotment itself I can see that there is a very real
danger that it may get neglected in favour of sitting and watching the
birds. Not long after I had arrived the nuthatches showed up and I managed
to have my camera ready. They are incredibly fast but they seem to favour
a certain branch at the moment as they land so it makes capturing them
a little easier. |

Looking at my first results
it is obvious that the plot has a fabulous depth of field that opens
up lots of potential for experimenting. Shortly after the nuthatch left
I got my second real thrill and for a moment I could hardly believe
what I was seeing. My attention had been grabbed by a strange coloured
bird sat in the tree just over the fence in the woods and looking through
my camera I got my first winter view of a female Brambling. (below)
Bramblings are very scarce this winter and up to this point I hadnt
seen one this season. I had seen them on my street before but never
on the allotment so this was clearly a first. As photos go they are
terrible but at least it proves that they were there! |

A male brambling also came into view on
the fence but I could not reach them from the angle at which I was sitting.
The photo above had to be taken through the car windscreen and I had
to be content with that as they shortly flew away. I very much hope
that with the attraction of food they will stick around for a while.
The brambling is a member of the finch family just like the female Chaffinch
below. To date the females have been very timid but this one was very
brave. |
