I have had my allotments since 2001 and for many years I worked them growing fruit and vegetables for my growing family many hours a day. Then the council came along and mistakenly bulldozed most of it and so that put an end to that. For two years afterwards I suffered from very poor health and could not get back onto the site. At no time though did I let it go. It is a fabulous site and I knew that one day it would be the making of me and I would regret it if I lost that. And so it was that in October 2006 the sun began to shine for me again and I wanted to return to this plot and regain my soul that had been missing for so long. Back in October you could not even get on the site, such was the neglect. Weeds were five feet high and there were no paths to speak of. The council had also been trimming back trees up in the wood and had left many of the branches littering the top of my plot. It was all a real mess and needed alot of hard work just to make it look tidy!

Through the winter months I cleared alot of the weeds and started to think of the feeding station I wanted to create. At first I knew I couldnt spend much time there so I set up a few rudimentary perches just for feeding the birds and to get them used to coming in. I had my target birds, mainly Nuthatch, Jay and Greater spotted woodpecker and knew it would take time to get them to come in. The photo of the Nuthatch above was taken at Marbury Country park in Cheshire and I wanted to create opportunities to take similar photos. The nuthatch is quite rare in the northwest but it seems to have a stronghold here and I hear them calling often. I have never seen one out in the open so I am really hoping that I can attract them down to feed.
