Psilos allotment birds

Wednesday May 7thd 2008 - "With bated berath"

Now that the breeding season is well upon us the feeding station is very quiet. Over the last few days I have seen a pair of jays around and they have come into the feeding station. They are obviously nesting nearby. So I went up just to sit and see if they would return.

I really did not have to wait long. With bated breath I saw one bird fly to a nearby tree on the edge of my allotment. Jays are such wary birds that I hardly dared move. Crouching low in the grass I waited and hoped. The seconds ticked by, the jay looked all around to see if the coast was clear then flew down to feed.
The first couple of visits I found frustrating. It was a windy day and vegetation kept blowing around and obscuring my view. I moved a few times to get optimum view without being too obvious. In the end though it did not seem that necessary as he became quite bold and came in several times giving me some lovely views. I missed some shots on perches I would have loved but hopefully there will be other times.
