"The reds of Formby"

Sand dunes of Formby point

Freshfield, Formby, home to the red squirrel seems to be quite a different place in the spring to the place it is in the winter. During the winter the red squirrel is very visible, readily approaching people for food and even feeding out of your hand. Today their behaviour was very different. Most of the time they could only be seen from a distance as they leapt from tree to tree or foraged on the ground for food. At no time did they ever come close.

Today the weather is superb. Clear blue skies and bright sunshine that lights up the woods and makes for beautiful highlights in which to photograph the distant squirrels. I may not have got many close ups but it made for some beautifully lit scenes.

jackdaw

Walking through the woods towards the beach I watched a singing wren and several singing coaltits, many jackdaws, magpies and chaffinches. The jays that can usually be seen everywhere have disappeared. Over in the sanddunes there are goldfinches and linnets. Today the beach is busy with people enjoying the sun and there is nothing to be seen so I give up and decide to spend the rest of the day at Martinmere.
