"Redwings"

Today with a need for some fresh air I took a walk over the playing fields on the other side of my street. The light was pretty dull but the birds more than made up for the weather. Foraging on the ground was a large flock of redwings. I have seen them around several times during the winter and today there must have been about a hundred of them.

Redwings are very wary birds and getting close to them can be difficult. Everytime I moved up the field so did they and they took flight very easily. In the end I had to content myself with some rather distant shots. Still it was a very pleasant way to spend an hour.

The redwing above can be seen swallowing the last of a rather juicy worm.

Redwings are winter visitors here and will be returning to northern Europe shortly. They fly around in large flocks and they are always on the look out. Large flocks are scared off much more easily than individual birds which is why they are difficult to get close to.

Even whilst sat in trees they are not easy to approach.

and here is a photo showing how the redwing gots its name. The red underside of its wing can clearly be seen.
