It is a few weeks since I last
paid Martinmere a visit and so prepared myself for the change in wildlife.
The mere seemed so empty and quiet as all the Whooper swans have returned
to Iceland to breed. In their place a few single Avocets fed along with
several Redshank and Black tailed Godwits. All were too distant to photograph
well so I soon lost interest and went in search of other inspiration.
One of the main reasons I wanted to visit was to photograph the new
additions to the reserve. I particularly wanted to photograph the latest
Hawaiian Goose goslings, ducklings and Coot chicks. Happily I was not
to be disappointed. |

As I laid photographing
the Hawaiian geese goslings I noticed a female Chaffinch collecting
feathers on the grass in front of me. |

Then she flew up and showed
me what she was building. A nest so well camaflagued I would have walked
right by it.

Both male and female
were around busily feeding with the female occasionally returning to
the nest. I do not think there are any eggs as yet. |
