This morning I went up to my
allotment with all the intention of working hard, digging my plot and
not being distracted by the birds. As usual it did not quite work out
like that and of course I had also taken my camera so further putting
temptation in my way. The morning was bright and cool and I was working
on the very edge of my feeding station. I am creating a wildflower meadow
this year and the ground needs alot of digging over. |

Naturally before
I started work I filled up the bird table and within minutes a pair
of Nuthatches cane in. At first they scolded me for being so close (no
more than 6 feet away) but after a while they did not bother with me.
They were obviously very hungry and took in alot of food before going
on their many trips to hide it. The magpies seem to
have deserted the station in favour of taking up territory wars with
six other magpies that have turned up, keeping the feeders clear for
the smaller birds.

Sadly by the time
I eventually gave in to the Nuthatches the light was failing. I downed
spade and waited for them to turn up. They did not disappoint but wished
I had taken my shots earlier. Now I have them here regularly I could
do with changing some of the perches and keep them guessing. |

A pair of Jays
were also around but refused to come in over the fence. There is nothing
more frustrating than seeing a jay preening and wing stretching and
you cannot photograph it. Eventually I got fed up of waiting and went
to dump some weeds from my wheelbarrow. On my return I scared both birds
up from the feeders. I think they just knew I wasnt there in the car! |

The robins also
took advantage of my digging. They hunted around in the wet soil and
took their fair share of worms. and who resist a cheeky robin anyway? |
