Grey wagtails - "We are family 4"

My what a difference a week makes! Having returned from a trip to London last weekend I then have been laid up all this week with a bad throat infection and havent left the house until today. Was very warm and humid and decided to take a very gentle walk up to see if the Grey wagtails were around. The last time I saw them they had journeyed a fair way down river but knowing they usually stayed on their territory thought that they might still be found. They were not to be found on their usual spot but I did not have to go very far up river before I found them.

Today though I found birds of a very different nature. In total I found two families quite close together but it was the family with five birds together that interested me most. My original family consisted of the two adults and three juveniles and I felt reasonably confident that the birds I was seeing were indeed the same ones. These birds were incredibly flighty, very active and impossible to get close to. Any sign of danger and they were off up high into the trees where they would stay. The juveniles were well developed with lovely long tails. I was delighted to see they had made it.

Whilst there I was also delighted to see a Dipper fly passed. This is the bird I was originally looking for when I found the Wagtails. He flew quickly up river and I didnt see him again but it made me keen to take on another quest later in the week to go and find him. Whilst watching the Wagtails I also became aware of a pair of very agitated Greattits nearby. Closer observation showed that I was blocking the way to their nest site. Being the considerate soul that I am I moved on and let them carry on their most important work. The Nuthatches were also very vocal and active here today. On the way back to the car I watched a pair doing a very good performance of a Spotted flycatcher, repeatedly hovering out from a tree catching flies. I sure wish I could have gotten that on film! A great spot for birds and I am delighted my family of Wagtails have made it so far. I am determined to go back real soon and track down those Dippers.
