And so it begins...

The Common Terns returned to Doffcocker in the last week of April and it wasnt long before I watched them mating. Now three weeks on they have set up territories and are sitting on eggs on the raft. There seems to be six pairs present. On the raft they spend alot of time squabbling and displaying to one another.

Sitting on the raft I was delighted that they accepted my presence so quickly. I had been there barely an hour when two birds came down to bath close by. As yet the birds are sitting tight so there isnt much flight activity to photograph so I will just have to be patient and wait until they have chicks to feed.

As ever the Black headed gulls were giving the Terns a hard time. Much chasing and screaming ensues!

On the lake a pair of Great crested grebes have 2 chicks but the other pair seem to have lost their nest. The geese as usual have also been prevented breeding and so collect in larger groups to bath and preen.
