"Going for gold"

For the last two weeks I have been offline due to technical difficulties. Isnt technology wonderful? but happily it hasnt stopped me from going out with my camera. Mid September is when bird numbers start to rise. Pink footed geese start to migrate south in their thousands and there is a real sense of expectancy in the air.

For this visit I am at Marshside at the right time. Early afternoon when the sun has moved around and is now sitting behind us. In the carpark a kestrel is busy hunting and for once allows us to get quite close. Getting this close to this small falcon is a first for me.

Lapwings

Looking out from Nels hide there is a sparse but even spread of birds. We have missed a large flock of |Golden plover by minutes but there are a few single birds still standing about. Lapwings, Black tailed Godwits, Curlews, Ruff and Snipe are also present.

The plaintive call of the Curlew was a very welcome sound. The bird in the photo above took a very energetic bath, the noise of his wings beating the water carrying for quite some distance. Too far for any decent photos but later he did come alittle closer and stretched his wings before taking flight.

It would seem that Snipe are very numerous this year. At first we only saw single birds but then they moved in in much greater numbers with up to a dozen birds being out in the open at any one time. No doubt for every bird you can see there are several more that you cant.
Their plumage is so well camaflagued for thier habitat but today they were really quite bold with many birds being seen right out in the open..
