Flight s hots are what I enjoy
taking the most and today wasnt to be a disappointment. Although many
birds were distant it was great to get the practise in once again. Slow
fliers like this grey heron that just sailed slowly by the hide in good
light was a gift.

The alarm call
of several Swallows however was to tell us that there was a much faster
target in the area. A raptor was somewhere very close and with bated
breath we watched. From the left she came very quickly with a small
bird hanging from her talons. The surprise of her and the speed meant
that I only got one shot before she was off into the distance. A juvenile
Goldfinch was the prey and we watched her through a telescope as she
sat in the grass and enjoyed her meal.

Duck numbers are also on the
increase. There are plenty of Teal around with the males still in eclipse
plumage and so not looking at their best. A few Wigeon and Shoveler
are also around.

Pink footed geese were today
moving through in their thousands. Their high pitched call is a real
sound of the approaching winter and I love to hear them. Mostly they
were pretty distant but occassionally a few came alittle nearer. |

There are also
large numbers of Canada geese at Marshside. I dont normally photograph
canada geese but as they all took off I thought it made quite a dynamic
shot. A really good way to end the day. |
