Tess and her kittens

Toby

6 months old

This is Toby. He is the son of Tess from her last litter of kittens and he is almost 9 months old (March 2009) I have never had a cat before and he was no longer wanted by his owner so I agreed tot ake him. SInce that day he has been an endless source of joy for me. He is so full of mischief. In the photo above he is watching the budgie. He tried to catch her several times but never really succeeded. Sadly Tess accomplished in one night what he didnt in two months and the budgie is no longer with us.

Like all cats he has a good ability to track down all the sunniest spots to lie in them. Next week though he is going to be castrated. poor Toby!

March 18th 2009

Today Toby was castrated and had the second of his injections.. Driving him to the vets he cried the most haunting sad cry you ever heard. It really was quite distressing. Handed him over and had to walk away. Five hours later and I got him back. I was so pleased to see him. I opened his carrier a little and kissed him before putting him back. In the car he barely made any noise at all. The only cat not pleased to see him was Tess who hissed violently and wouldnt let him out. In the end I had to remove her so that I could get Toby out in comfort. He was so pleased to be back. He wanted lots of cuddles and was jumping around with so much energy. Very soon though he tired himself out and just flopped in the middle of the room and went to sleep. The wound is so small you can hardly see it though Toby licks it plenty which I guess will keep it clean. The whole experience didnt seem to affect him much at all. Not sure I can say the same for me!

Toby is now almost 10 months old and I cant beleive how much he has changed in the 4 months we have had him. In the first photo posted here he still looks very much like a kitten but now he loves more and more like an adult. His body and face have filled out and his fur is much thicker and more glossy.

Toby spends alot of time out in the garden. He loves climbing the trees and chasing and catching bees and flies. He also has a fondness for bumble bees which he keeps bringing into the house. I hope he doesnt get stung but as he chases them with such vigour it seems almost inevitable.

Toby loves to play with the kittens but at times he gets far too hyper and there is a real danger that he will hurt them. In the photo above it shows how he lays in wait for a kitten to appear then he pounces on them. The kittens squeal and cry and I think they dont like it but when you pull Toby off they go chasing him. Below he is playing with sammie

May 6th 2009 - Tobys relationship with Tess continues to be somewhat temptetuous. When Tess was neutered I thought she would settle down a bit but her dislike of Toby seems to continue unabated and she will regularly attack him. Poor Toby doesnt know how to react at times. One day last week I watched as Sammie washed his ears. By the expression and angle of his head he was clearly enjoying it. Then Tess steps down off the windowsill where she was sitting. She puts one foot on the carrier where the two cats are laid, lowers her head and joins in with the washing of Tobys ears. Toby was in heaven and eventually Tess walked away without uttering a single hiss. The truce it would appear though was very short lived and once again he runs in fear of his life when Tess is mooching.

Toby seems totally unfazed by the disappearance of Sammie and continues to play with the other two kittens in the same over vigorous way that he always has done.

After he has eaten he often likes to either sit on the sofa or the windowsill to wash himself. This always seemed to fascinate Sammie who was maybe looking for some tips. Last night all the cats got thrown out of my bedroom for fighting whilst i was trying to sleep. Here is a photograph of Toby taken by my 15 years old daughter next morning trying to look all contrite.

July 28th 2009 Toby is now well over a year old and has had a large dose of testosterone from somewhere recently. Now he takes on Tess much more readily and will openly taunt her. He is however intimidated by Isacc who is still a complete male and as a result probably a threat to Toby. It has unsettled him a little though hopefully it will settle one Isacc has been castrated. He has also started catching birds, something he never used to do. I think maybe I need to try him with a collar and bell again. He is also moulting out his eye brows and looks quite uneven as they slowly grow back.
