GOSLINGS

Several years ago numbers of Canada geese soared. People complained that they made a mess and so for a number of years attempts to cull their numbers was made by smashing all the eggs. For two years there were no new goslings at all. Last year some goslings were born and this year even more. I suspect attampts are still made to keep numbers low but if you are a goose and dont nest on the main island then the chances of your eggs making it are good. On May 1st I saw the first goslings though they were already nearly a week old. For the sake of this journal I have called them the Doffcocker five. They were the goslings of geese that were born on this lake three years ago and who have now bred for the very first time.
