Last year the Black necked Swans had
five cygnets and raised four of them successfully. Their progress can
be seen here.
This year on April 24th the pair appeared, having kept their nest site
very private with only two cygnets. The photos below will show their
progress throughout the following summer months. The cygnets in the
first few photos are only about 3-4 days old. The male can be seen in
the front of the photo with the female behind him.
Sadly upon my last visit I found that one
of the cygnets had died and so now there is only one left.
June 8th and
happily the cygnet is still with us. He has grown quite alot and is
foraging really well for himself. going much further from his parents.
JUNE 23rd 2005 -
Sadly upon this visit I found that the last cygnet
had fallen prey to a Grey heron so no Black necked swan cygnets will
be reared at Martinmere this year.
