June 2009 Doffcocker lodge, Bolton. A long
drawn out screech in the air signals the arrival of yet another
Common tern with a fish. At this time when there are many chicks
to be fed there always seems to be great confusion as to who the
fish is for? After several visits to the raft and a few circles
out front he finally lands on the regular perch with the fish still
in his mouth. |

Suddenly a very vocal female lands beside
him and starts to beg for the fish. At this time of month I thought
she stood no chance. Image my surprise when he turned to her and gave
her the fish. I have seen the males do this before the females lay but
never later on. There was a pair who produced a chick late last year.
Maybe this pair like to produce 2 broods before going back to Africa? |

The fish goes down and the male is such
a clever boy! The tern with the silver BTO ring I think has been coming
back to this site for over 4 years. |

With the fish swallowed the female does
not rest and demands another. Poor guy! |

There is no rest. With a quick shake of
his feathers he is back out to try and catch another fish for his mate.
There is nothing quite like a dedicated male! |
