The Formby Fox

page 2

(Vulpes vulpes)

I dont think the squirrels ever thought of him as a very real threat as at times they would come dangerously close to him. But the fox bided his time. I think he thought that whilst we were around then the squirrels may be encouraged to come down to ground too. The young healthy squirrels were much too fast for him though. I think the only squirrel he was ever likely to catch was maybe a sick or very old and slow one.

To get so close to a truely wild animal is a truely humbling experience. The fox stayed around for about half an hour and eventually gave up and decided to look for prey elsewhere. He was a very healthy fox and a real character. His uncharacteristic trust in us left me with memories that I shall cherish forever.
