Birding in Ibiza

Greater Flamingoes

Down in the south of the island right by the airport is the town of Sal salines. Here there is a natural park that consists of a number of salt lakes where salt is collected today much like it was 2000 years ago. TheSalt lakes are home to wild Greater Flamingoes and it was here that I was hoping at long last to get some flight shots.

I found three main flocks of flamingoes and they numbered several hundred birds in total. Sadly I was unable to get close to them but just seeing them in the wild was amazing.

They appeared to have bred well this summer as there were plenty of juveniles around. (above)

With their huge wings and long dangling legs coming in to land takes a certain amount of finesse!

But up in the air they are awesome...
