Arriving by boat on a remote beach I noticed
a lone bird diving for fish in the sea. Eager to investigate further
I made my way over to where I had last seen him to find that the fish
had left the water and was sitting on a concrete jetty. The bird was
a juvenile Shag. |

Sitting on the jetty he certainly appeared
to be in no hurry. Slowly I crept closer and closer and he never moved
Only the incoming tide prevented me from getting up on the jetty beside
him. |

After a while I left him to his preening
and went to sit with my children. After about an hour the bird went
back into the water and fished some more. When he had finished he then
decided he was going to come up onto the beach and sit with me. He was
the tamest Shag I have ever met and I managed to photograph him with
my macro lens from 18inches away. |

He seemed totally unfazed by all the beach
activities and stayed there all the time I was on the beach. An extraordinary
bird. |
