Flying in for lunch

Long tailed tit antics

Trying to photograph a small bird flying at great speed at a feeder is no easy task, but when they are as prolific and cute as a recent flock of Long tailed tits that visited then it is worth all the frustration and effort to try. All these photos were taken using the Canon 350d and the sigma 170-500mm apo dg. It was a very bright sunny day and the feeder was in reasonable light so average shutterspeeds were at around 1/500.

The main problem I found with capturing these birds was getting the focus in the right place. The lens wants to focus on the feeder but the bird is to one side and once they hit feeder the action is lost. So trying to focus on only one side of the feeder helped alittle. Trying to second guess them though is very frustrating as you never know which direction they are going to fly in from. So many times luck has to be on your side.
