Woodley Waxwings - page 3

During this time the waxwings started to also use stealth tactics. Each time you saw the Mistlethrushes driving off the majority of the flock we noticed that birds were spreading themselves out more and instead of flying away as before would sit very still and very quiet. Remaining still like this they were often overlooked by the mistlethrushes and after a minute or two would resume feeding.

Berries werent the only food on the menu either. As they sat in the trees on the other side of the road I watched as they fed on young buds that were breaking out on the trees.

Two days I watched the waxwings and it was amazing to see how they changed their tactics for finding food as the supply of berries got depleted. At first they were easily scared off by the thrushes but by the end of the second day their sheer tenacity and numbers were winning. More raids were made on the right hand tree and more and more birds were quietly remaining behind to eat their fill.
