Martinmere November 6th 2011 - This day the pink footed geese
just kept on coming. Thousands upon thousands of birds. Their familiar
call in flight was nothing compared to the sinister hum that emanated
from the flock whilst on the ground. It was something akin to a large
swarm of bees, or, to my mind, like the sound the Zulus made (from
the film) whilst still concealed over the hill to frighten their victims.
It was eerie indeed and sent a shiver up my spine. These creatures
are truely wild. This photograph may have a romantic quality to it
but there is nothing romantic in nature. It is harsh and life can
be very hard at times for these birds. It is great that places like
Martinmere offer them such a valuable lifeline where they can feed
over the winter months and we can enjoy their beauty.
