Increasing in number in recent years, especially
in the North of the UK the Brimstone butterfly is very easy to recognise,
The male is sulphar yellow in colour, the female pale green. Occurs
around woodland and hedgerows. Its preferred food source for the larvae
is Buckthorn. The adults can be seen sipping nectar from teasel, knapweed
and buddleia. New adults emerge from their chrysalids in July and live
until the following July. Adults hibernate over winter in woodlands
and emerge on warm spring days. Last year's brimstones are often the
first butterflies to be seen in spring.
