Painted lady Cynthia cardui |
A medium to large sized butterfly with
a wingspan of 57mm. Found Worldwide but the ones arriving on the UK
mainland arrive from Southern Europe and North Africa appearing April
onwards. Migration south begins in October. During the summer they can
produce three generations. The female lays eggs on thistles, nettles
and a few other plants. The caterpillars are grey or black with yellow
stripes along the side |
