Inachis io

One of the most familiar and beautiful of all the UK butterflies that is found in a wide range of habitats. Large nettle patches are chosen areas for egg laying. Preferred nectar sources are willows in spring and teasels, thistles, and hemp-agrimony in late summer. The adults overwinter and often are the first to venture out during sudden spells of warm weather. Usually seen from March to September.
