Doffcocker lodge is only one of two nature
reserves to be found in Bolton, Greater Manchester. Located and protected
in a green belt area it is a site of Biological importance. The reserve
is centred on a disused reservoir, originally created in 1874 by the
damming of the Doffcocker Brook to provide a mill lodge. It provides
a variety of habitats including reed beds, woodland, grassland and 2
large lakes. During the summer warblers such as Blackcaps, Chiffchaff
and Grasshopper warbler can regularly be heard singing. Great crested
grebes breed well here and in winter large flocks of Tufted ducks and
Cormorants can be seen. Redpolls and Goldeneye can also occassionally
be seen. |
