Fox

(Vulpes vulpes)

The fox now is a very common mammal of both town and country. Related to the dog it has become a very proficient scavenger, often raiding dustbins at night. In the countryside were they have a more natural diet they will live off birds, small mammals, birds eggs, insects and even ripe fruit. Mostly only one litter is produced a year, but in years of plenty 2 0r 3 litters are not unheard of. Three cubs is the average number produced per litter. The average lifespan of a fox is 6 years.

The foxes photographed here live on the reserve at Pennington Flash. They are thought to be two of this years cubs. The larger of the two, presumably the male was quite bold and readily ventured out into the open, whereas the smaller vixen stayed hidden in the long grass.
