Of the seven species of deer found in the
UK the Red deer is the largest standing at 1.5m at the shoulder. Most
of the Red Deer in Britain are found in Scotland, but there are significant
wild populations in south-west and north-west England, East Anglia and
the north Midlands. Adult Red Deer usually stay in single-sex groups
for most of the year, coming together for mating during the October
'rut'. Calves are usually born in June. Red deer can live for up to
20 years but in reality very few do.
