The Weasel

Mustela nivalis

Widespread throughout the UK, the weasel is the smallest of the carniverous mammals. Do not let his cute face fool you for one moment as he is a very ferocious and deadly predator of rodents, birds, eggs and young rabbits. Weasels do not hibernate for their small size means that they can access tunnels at any time of the day or year. Their home range varies in size depending upon the availability of prey with the male and female occupying seperate ranges. Head/body length: Males 194-217mm; Females 173-183mm. The weasel in the photographs below was seen at Pennington flash staking out the bird feeding station, April 2005.
