African Yellowbill

(Anas undulata undulata)

Also known as the yellow billed duck this is a resident breeding species commonly found in eastern and southern Africa. It is not a migratory bird but it will move in order to find water during the dry season. This is a gregarious bird, found in large flocks outside the breeding seaon. About the same size as a Mallard this dabbling duck can be found in any freshwater habitat, where they feed on aquatic vegetation.Feeding is mainly done in the evening or at night. Sexes are alike though the juveniles are duller. The call is said to resemble the teal whistle in the male and the quack of a Mallard for a female. I find these very quiet ducks and have never heard them call.
