Argentine Ruddy Duck

(Oxyura vittata)

Also known as Argentine Lake duck or Argentine blue billed duck. This is a diving duck from southern lowland South America. It can be found on pools, marshes and shallow lakes where there is extensive vegetation. This is not a common bird but it does not seem particularly threatened in the wild.

These birds reach maturity at 2 years old. Pair bondings are weak and the male will only stay long enough to see that the eggs are being incubated, then he will desert. The female is left to care for the young alone where she will teach them to feed on a diet of seeds, plant remains and small invertebrates.
