Argentinian red Shoveler

(Anas platalea)

This species is native to the southern half of South America and can be found on shallow lakes and pools with dense reed beds, marshes and lagoons. The female is a typical brown but the russet of the male below has a subtle attractiveness. Both have the distinctive wide spatulate type bill of the shoveler with which they dabble and sift aquatic plants and invertebrates in shallow water.
