A large gull found in the Mediterranean
and along the north west Afrian coast. In the late 1960s, this was one
of the world's rarest gulls, with a population of only 1,000 pairs.
Today the population has increased but still remains rare at around
10,000 pairs. Breeding takes place on small isalnds in small colonies
or alone. Unlike many gulls this is not a scavenger but a specialist
fish eater usually feeding at night well out at sea. Sexual maturity
takes four years and this bird rarely wanders from its breeding territory.
