Australian Shoveler

(Anas rhynchotis)

This is the Australian cousin of our European Shoveler. Both share the same broad spatulate bill which they use to sift through very wet mud searching for invertebrate insects. They also share the same russet sides. The females are a pale mottled brown. The photo below shows the male in full breeding plumage.
