The Avocets of Marshside

This striking black and white wader is the symbol for the RSPB and is one of the most successful conservation stories in the UK. Its breeding return in the 1940s has since seen an increase in numbers and today they can be found in a number of locations around the UK. One such place is at Marshside near Southport on the NW coast. During the winter they can be found only on the SW coast. They were due to arrive back at Marshside during the first week in April but this year, 2005 they arrived back on the 9th of March. By March 19th there were 7 birds present.

The avocet in the photo above was photographed on June 3rd 2005. By then 36 Avocets were present with several pairs rearing chicks. Sadly the chicks were always too far away to get any photos of them.
