Baers pochard

(Aythya baeri)

This rapidly declining, very vulnerable species can be found breeding in the Amur and Ussuri basins in Russia and north-eastern China. It winters around Japan and many countries in the SE of Asia. It breeds in areas of thick vegetation around lakes which are rich in aquatic vegetation. The reasons for its decline are not well known but it is thought that hunting and wetland destruction play a major role. This is a shy bird.
