A common and widespread greyish coloured
warbler. Although it is a summer visitor this bird is increasingly seen
overwintering where it readily feeds on seeds at the garden bird table.
Its breeding habitat is to be found in mixed and deciduous woodland
and anywhere there are tall trees and a dense undergrowth of shrubs.
The adult (below) has a dense black cap, the female a chestnut coloured
one. Its diet consists of berries and insects. Its delightful fluting
song has earned it the name 'northern nightingale' |
