Also known as the eared grebe this is one
of the UKS rarest breeding grebes. Its breeding habitat includes small,
shallow lakes and lochs with plenty of surrounding aquatic vegetation
with small populations being found in central and north west England
and Scotland. In winter it can be found on inland lakes and reservoirs,
sheltered estuaries and coasts. Its diet consists of insects, crustaceans
and small fish. The bird in the photos below was photographed at Pennington
