Black necked grebe

Podiceps nigricollis

Also known as the eared grebe this is one of the UKS rarest breeding grebes. Its breeding habitat includes small, shallow lakes and lochs with plenty of surrounding aquatic vegetation with small populations being found in central and north west England and Scotland. In winter it can be found on inland lakes and reservoirs, sheltered estuaries and coasts. Its diet consists of insects, crustaceans and small fish. The bird in the photos below was photographed at Pennington Flash, Leigh in March 2006.
