Black spur winged Goose

( Plectropterus gambensis )

A very large aggressive goose that is found in Africa on lakes and other large bodies of water. So named because of a a spur on the elbow of each wing that is used in defence against predators this is a very colourful goose with feathers displaying quite a range of iridescant colours. Uulike most geese this species can be found perching in trees. Their diet consists of aquatic vegetation, fruits and grasses. Nest building takes place under cover with incubation, solely undertaken by the female. lasting for about a month. Rearing of the goslings is carried out by both sexes. This goose whilst not endangered is protected by law.
