Black Swan

(Cygnus atratus)

This Swan is native to most of Australia and Tasmania. They now also exist in a semi-wild state in New Zealand and Sweden. It is a very social species and can often be found breeding in loose colonies. This is something rarely tolerated by other Swan species. Their plumage is completely black except for a white area on the wings which shows only in flight. The diet is mainly vegetative but they will also take worms and insects.

On a trip to Slimbridge in February 2005 I came across a pair of Black swans with two cygnets that were about 4 weeks old.

This is a juvenile black swan at around 7 months old.
