Black tailed Godwit

(Limosa limosa)

A very large wading bird that in the past has suffered a severe population decline. It breeds in Northern Europe and many birds spend their winter months on the coasts of the UK. During the breeding season it can be found on lowland wet grassland, coastal grazing marshes and (in Shetland) in small marshes at the edge of moorland. During the winter months it can be found on estuaries and coastal lagoons. They feed on a diet of insects, worms and snails.
