A small dark goose, that depending on the
race, can either be pale or dark bellied. This is very much a coastal
goose, nesting on the Arctic tundra where there are shallow pools. In
the winter it can be found on our esturies and shallow coasts mainly
in the south east of England. Many of the light bellied birds can be
found around the coast of Ireland. It can also be found grazing on fields
where it feeds on vegetation, particularly eelgrass. Birds arrive in
October and return north in March. They fly in loose flocks and not
in large skeins like many other grey geese. |
