Bufflehead

(Bucephala albeola)

This is a wonderfully cheeky duck that comes from amongst the boreal forests and aspen parklands of Canada and Alaska.During the winter months they can be found through the US towards the north of Mexico. They are a small diving duck that seems to spend more time under the water than on top of it. This can make them very difficult to photograph. They live on a diet of both freshwater and saltwater aquatic invertebrates, seeds and bulrushes.

The following photo may be more familiar to anyone who has ever tried to photograph a Bufflehead. It is a bird that when feeding spends far more time under the water than on top of it. As a result many photos end up like the one below.
