A bird of prey, whose range covers most
of Europe and extends into Asia. Absent or scarce from most of eastern
England, although slowly spreading east. It is a medium sized raptor
with a size between 51-57 cm in length with a 110 to 130 cm wingspan.
It is a resident bird except in the coldest parts of its range. It breeds
in woodland, but usually hunts over open land. It eats mainly small
mammals and carrion. A variable bird with a wide range of plumages.
