Canada Goose

(Branta canadensis)

An introduced species from North America, everybody knows the Canada goose. It is widespread and resident throughout most of the UK and can be seen in many parks, lakes and gravel pits. They are a very noisy and gregarious bird and can often be seen in flocks totalling many hundreds of birds.

During the breeding season Canada Geese like to breed on short vegetation near pools and lakes. They also like islands in lakes and gravel pits. Some also nest on moorland. Their nests are easily recogniseable as they are usually of a very open and loose structure, made out of sticks. The female lays 5-6 eggs and incubates them for 28-30 days.
