Canvasback

(Aythya valisineria)

A migrant bird that breeds in Alaska, western Canada and the northwest United States., and winters in Mexico and the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. It is a very striking bird with its very large beak and bright red eye. It is a diving duck that feeds on aquatic vegetation and invertebrates.
 
 
 
At Martinmere the adult canvasback is quite a character. He rarely seems to spend much time in the water and he always sits in the same place. I call him the Grandad because he always looks a bit scruffy and is nearly always asleep. (photo below)
