Cape Barren goose

(Cereopsis novaehollandiae)

Cape Barren geese are found along the southern coast of Australia and on quite a few offshore islands. Their ability to drink salt or brackish water allows numbers of geese to remain on offshore islands all year round. Numbers of the geese do however travel to farmland pastures on the mainland during the summer looking for food. In the 1950s numbers fell so low they faced extinction but due to breeding initiatives they are now no longer threatened in the wild but still remains one of the rarest geese in the world

These geese are really quite vocal and will aggressively defend their territory. At Martinmere they are not allowed to roam free like most of the other geese as they would readily threaten anyone who came too close.
