Cape Teal

(Anas capensis )

This duck also know as the Cape Wigeon comes from eastern and southern Africa where it is found in shallow lakes, marshes and coastal lagoons. They are dabbling ducks but they can also dive for food which consists of water plants, plankton, crustaceans and tadpoles. There is very little difference between the sexes.

At Martinmere these birds breed very well. Large barrells are provided for the ducks to breed in. When the eggs are a few days off hatching they are taken to the nursery and reared there until they are old enough to be introduced into the main reserve. The ducklings below are about 8 weeks old.
