Chestnut teal

(Anas castanea)

A gregarious duck that can be found in large flocks in many areas south of the Tropic of Capricorn. It can be found on coastal swamplands, tidal mudflats and inland water courses where it feeds on a diet of plant matter and insects. The male and female can often be found together but if split up the female can easily be identified by the bright red eye that is present in both sexes.

Chestnut teal breed well at Martinmere. Mostly the ducklings are hatched and reared in the nursery but sometimes, like with the family below some eggs get missed. These ducklings did very well and most survived.

The chicks below were raised in the nursery. They are about 10 days old.
