Common Sandpiper

(Actitis hypoleucos)

This is quite a small wader identifiable mainly by the contrasting dark brown and white of its plumage. During the breeding season this bird is widespread across Europe, found mainly beside fast flowing rivers and streams, as well as besides lochs and reservoirs. In the UK it is found in Scotland, Wales, Ireland and Northern England. During the winter months migration takes them to the south coast. These are not gregarious birds and are seldom seen in flocks. Their diet consists of insects, crustaceans and other invertebrates which they catch by foraging on the ground or in water. It's flight consists of bursts on slightly bowed wings , interspersed with short glides . A prominent pale wing bar is noticeable as well as barred sides to the dark tail.
